April is Oral Cancer Awareness month in the United States, a month dedicated to encouraging the public to look after their oral health. Awareness of oral cancer among the general public is low. A key area to know more about is the signs and symptoms of Oral Cancer (part of Head and Neck Cancers).
The main symptoms are: A lump or swelling anywhere in the mouth, jaw or neck that persists for more than 3 weeks. Difficulty swallowing, chewing or moving the jaw or tongue. Numbness of tongue or other area of the mouth. A feeling that something is caught in the throat.
This April, the Head and Neck Cancer Coalition UK is urging everyone to do their bit to help raise awareness.
Dental professionals can let their patients know they are carrying out a thorough head and neck cancer check at their annual routine appointment. Health professionals can display leaflets and posters on the signs and symptoms to look out for. All our members offer easily accessible awareness raising materials.
There is  a quick 2-minute self-check for mouth cancer, which can easily be done at home. All you need is a mirror, good light source and clean fingers. At each step you are inspecting and feeling for any lumps, red or white patches, changes in colour or texture, lingering ulcers or anything unusual. You can follow the steps here – www.mouthcancerfoundation.org/self-examination/
Fundraising events can also be held – anything to bring the public’s attention to the disease.
